Review: House M.D. episode 5×24, Both Sides Now, season finale

Although the entire season ends with the beautiful wedding of Chase and Cameron, this episode was far from “Shiny happy people” and much closer to “Loosing my religion”. As always the finale of House M.D. is way contradicting in many ways and the least unexpected. This episode got me way unprepared. Even in my wildest speculations, I would not predict such a creepy finale. For those of you who have not watched it yet, I envy you, because this was “Saw I” or even “The sixth sense” kind of screenplay (as much this is possible for a TV show). The directors were playing this all along since the previous episode in which we saw the passion between Cuddy and Gregory. News flash, It did not happen. Nothing did happen, it was all in the head of House. Everything, since he insulted her in her office, was not real, he never told her he was hallucinating, he never detox in this home with her, he never made love to her. It was all the Vicodine.

“So, this is the story you made up about who you are. It’s a nice one” says at the end… Amber, and Kutner adds” “Too bad it isn’t true“

What could I add to this ? Nothing. The episode was truly marvelous, no words can match it. Even patient in this episode was with two identities, far from just a coincidence.

However all the question you might ask your self are circling in my mind as well. Especially after seeing House walking to Mayfield Psychiatric Hospital at the end of the episode. Is his career over ? Will he be back ? Is the show over ?

However, Alan Sepinwall (from nj.copm) thinks that the directors use the same trick from previous season:

I object to the same kind of surprise twist, told over and over, by the same storyteller. Piling one hallucination on top of House’s previous hallucination, on a show that already did a season finale where the main character was unwittingly hallucinating (and then did a season finale last year where he was having visions but was aware of it), well… that’s too much. Sorry. When you go to that well multiple times, it stops being a cool trick and becomes just a trick.

And that is something I can not agree with. Houses hallucinations have never been so real, and he has never believed in them as deep as now. What we object was the finale condition of his drug addicted life, and this was not presented to out of nowhere, but it graded trough the seasons to reach its pick. A trick ? Alan, come on. After all this is what has made this show to be so famous. You never know what would happen when House is around. Probably the story is a little similar, but you did not expect it, right ? No one did, and the good story is the one you do not expect, not the one you see and then say you expected it. So Alan, cant you just sit back and enjoy the show, because I surely did. It so sad to read afterwards statements like the one you wrote.
